Katni power project is a proposed 3200 MW coal-fired power project promoted by Welspun Energy at Katni District in Madhya Pradesh, India.
The proposal earlier submitted was based on domestic coal, but due to non availability of domestic coal, as an interim arrangement, the project proponent desires to go ahead with imported coal from Indonesia. Land requirement will be 1200 acres, which comprises mostly un-irrigated agricultural land (819.10 acres). Out of total land required, 538 acres will be used for main plant; 270 acres for ash disposal; 32 acres will be used for Colony; and 360 acres will be used for green belt.
Imported coal will be from Indonesia. Imported coal requirement will be 7.8 MTPA. Coal supply agreement for imported coal has been signed with M/s Oorja Resources India Pvt. Ltd for 6.0 MTPA and M/s PT Batubara Energy Indonesia for 2.0 MTPA. Coal will be imported through Haldia / Paradip or Damara Port
Though the project had lot of hurdle as people and specially women from near by villages intensively protested the land acquisition for this project as NDTV reported in Nov,2012 that Twenty farmers in Bujbuja village of Katni district in Madhya Pradesh sit every day on funeral pyres, with kerosene and match sticks at arm’s reach. This is a relay protest against acquisition of land by the government for a thermal power plant in the area.
On Diwali, a woman called Sunia Bai, allegedly set herself on fire after she was threatened by the authorities to give up her land. The rest of the protestors say they will do the same. They say the government acquired the plots for the 2000 MW project, against their will.
