The Centre has allotted 16 coal blocks for state PSUs including the Baitarni West block for a PSU in Odisha. Name of the PSU for which the block is allotted, has not been mentioned in a notification issued on Wednesday by the Union coal ministry.
Earlier, the state government has sought the block for Odisha Thermal Power Corporation Limited (OTPCL) to cater the fuel need for its proposed thermal power plant at Kamakyanagar in Dhenkanal district.
“We are not sure whether the block is allotted for OTPCL or any other PSU. Probably, they have allotted it for commercial purpose. If that is the case, we would sought another block for OTPCL,” energy minister Pranab Prakash Das told TOI.
After Manoharpur and dip side Manoharpur, Baitarni West is the third coal block allotted to the state by the Union coal ministry. The Centre had earlier allotted the Manoharpur and dip side Manoharpur in favour of Odisha Power and Coal Limited, a joint venture of OPGC and Odisha Hydro Power Corporation,
“If the Centre has allotted the coal block for commercial purpose, then state PSU—Odisha Mining Corporation would extract coal from the block and sell it to the steel plants located in the state at a reasonable price,” said an officer in the steel and mines department requesting anonymity. TOI
