Emerson to automate 1600MW super thermal power plant in Odisha, India

US-based engineering firm Emerson has won an order from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPCNational Thermal Power Corporation Limited, is an Indian Public Sector Undertaking, engaged in the business of generation of electricity and allied activities. NTPC's core business is generation and sale of...) of India to deliver automation technology for two units at the 1600MW Darlipali Super Thermal Power Station in Odisha, India.

The project is located in Sundergarh district. It is expected to support the growing power requirements in the region.

Commissioning of the first 800MW unit at the facility has been scheduled for December 2017. The second 800MW unit is likely to start operations three months after that.

Under the order, Emerson will be responsible for engineering, installation and commissioning of its Ovation systems at the facility.

Ovation technology will help to monitor and control each super-critical thermal unit’s boiler and critical balance-of-plant processes and equipment.

The firm will also offer its Rosemount Analytical online steam water analysis system and continuous emissions monitoring system, and Rosemount pressure and level transmitters for the facility, along with additional instrumentation.

Emerson India Process Management managing director Dr Amit Paithankar said: “Supercritical technologies boost the efficiency of coal-based electricity generation while reducing carbon and other emissions, but the high temperatures and pressures involved make them more challenging to control.

“Our automation specialists have proven expertise and our Ovation control system is in more than 300 of these complex units worldwide.”
