Odisha’s mines department had a few days back issued show cause notices and slapped a penalty of Rs 20,169 crore on MCL on charges of violating environment norms and other regulations.

“The show cause notices have been issued…towards compensation under Mines & Mineral Development Regulations (MMDR) Act 1957 for production in violation of mining plan, Environmental Protection Act 1986, Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981…,” the filing said.

Reply to the show cause notices, the company said, is to be submitted within 30 days from the date of issue of the notice.

As this has broader ramification, MCL is studying the show cause notices and taking the required actions.

“Mahanadi Coalfields is examining the show cause notices and taking all required actions, including collection of data and records, seeking expert opinion etc and reply of show cause notices will be submitted within the stipulated time,” the filing said.
